Fancher Needs To Go Part 2
The Mountaineer basketball team lost another embarrassing one yesterday. Appalachian State University just can't hold on to the ball. The team had 21 turnovers in this game, which is about average for the team this year. What does it take to get your team to hold on to the ball and take quality shots. Well, I would say good coaching and discipline. This team doesn't even listen to Fancher anymore. Isaac Butts routinely passes the ball out from 3 feet without even looking at the basket. The guards routinely throw the ball away. They are beating themselves which is a sign of bad coaching. The team dropped below .500 yesterday with the loss to conference newcomer Samford (14-15, 9-11 SoCon). (App is now 9-11 in conference, 12-17 overall). The team had an opportunity with a win to be in position for a bye for the first round of the Southern Conference tournament later this week. They were at home against a team that was 3-11 on the road coming into the game. App led by 5 at the half, but a Bulldog 23-4 run gave Sammy a 57-46 lead with 6 minutes to play. The game ended a 63-72 home loss. With the loss the Mountaineers will wind up as a 4 seed in the North Division. Since January 10th the team has been 2-8 in games decided by 5 points or less. App will play either GA Southern or Furman in the first round of the conference tournament (we won't know until after Monday's Furman vs. Wofford game). Appalachian beat Furman in their two meetings this year and GA Southern in their only meeting. I reiterate the cry to get rid of Fancher, but don't expect his contract to be bought out. I forsee one more dismal season under the current head man.
